Hermantown coffee shop determined to give back to communities
Nestled into the corner of a strip mall in Hermantown is a coffee shop with a global cause. Pelican Coffee has been open for only a year but has already made an impact on not only the Duluth area, but they also they have had a large impact on the world.
Pelican Coffee orders their coffee directly from sources where the beans are produced. In their shop they currently serve coffee from Brazil, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Papua New Guinea, Mexico and Ethiopia.
Their goal is to be able to not only support these farmers’ economies but also to be able to fund a mission trip that allows people to travel to these places to give back to their communities through Prayer Pelican Missions.
According to Mike Rhoades, owner of Pelican Coffee and marketing director for Prayer Pelican Missions, last year Prayer Pelican Missions sent over 1,000 missionaries on 20-30 missions to 24 cities and countries across the globe.
Since opening, they have made a pledge to give back 50 percent of their profits to local communities around the world. This does not just include funding mission trips, but in the Duluth area community they have partnered with places such as Hermantown Schools to help support youth membership programs.
