The UMD Women’s hockey team opened the season with a strong exhibition win on Saturday Sept. 24, 2016, defeating the Minnesota Whitecaps to a score of 4-1.
Lara Stalder and Ashleigh Brykaliuk powered the offensive attack with two goals each. Brykaliuk opened the scoring for the Bulldogs on a power play, rifling a wrist-shot past Whitecaps goalie Alli Altmann from the lower left dot at 7:14 of the first period.
The Whitecaps answered later in the first to even the score at a lone goal apiece. A score that would hold for the remainder of the first period.
Ashleigh Brykaliuk’s second tally secured the Bulldog lead for the remainder of the game on a one-time goal. Lara Stalder would get a power play goal herself as well as a breakaway tally in the second to cap the scoring for the Bulldogs.
There would be no scoring in the third period for either team. The Bulldogs had a strong defensive effort all game as sophomore goalie Maddie Rooney was on top of her game for the Bulldogs, stopping 33 of 34 shots in the winning effort.
