Safety Accessories
Many students are living on their own for the first time while attending college, and personal safety can become more important of an issue than it may have been previously.
Having a sense of security when living independently can impact a student’s experience in school.
UMDPD Sergeant Chris Shovein discussed the pros and cons of popular safety accessories and ranked them in the order of effectiveness and practicality for college students.
Defensive sprays, air horns, keychain weapons, stun guns and tasers are all self defense tools that can be carried for personal safety.
“Everybody is different. What works for one person may not work for another,” Shovein said.
By reviewing the benefits and drawbacks of each tool, students may determine what will work best for them.
When purchasing self defense equipment, Srgt. Shovein suggests using the following websites: galls.com, striechers.com, copsplus.com, and awma.com.
“Awareness and knowledge is the most important tools of any self defense and personal safety,” Shovein said. “It’s important to get training and make a conscious decision to be safe.”
