Zenith City Cabaret features UMD students

BY LAURA GRUHLKE | The Statesman This month's Zenith City Cabaret will feature some of the stars of UMD’s upcoming musical, “Spring Awakening.”

The Zenith City Cabaret started last summer and now happens almost every month. Duluthians are invited to see performances of songs not typically performed from the local theater community.

“There is a broad range of material being represented,” “Spring Awakening”’s director and choreographer Rebecca Katz Harwood said.

It is also a great place to preview some upcoming shows at local theaters in the area.

During this month’s cabaret, audience members will get a chance to see a preview of UMD Theatre’s “Spring Awakening” before it opens on April 14.

The cast will be performing the opening song titled “Mama Who Bore Me,” which will be performed by the female cast members in the production.

The sneak peak will consist of the solo performance followed by the reprise.

“It’s a cool experience to get out in the community,” cast member Erica VonBank said.

Katz Harwood described the upcoming event as lovely and rather informal.

“There is no set, no costumes, no distance between the audience and the performers,” Katz Harwood said.

Along with the preview for “Spring Awakening,” the show will also feature previews for the Duluth Playhouse’s upcoming “42nd Street” and The Underground’s upcoming “Rough Magic” along with other solo and duet performances as well.

“There is something cool about the stripped down nature of it,” Katz Harwood said.

Admission into this show is free, however there is a suggested donation to see the performance. The show will be held at the Zeitgeist Arts Atrium on Saturday April 2 at 8 p.m.
