BY HANNAH BROADBENT | The Statesman On Thursday Nov. 5, the UMDPD put out a campus crime alert about a series of bike thefts that occurred on campus.
The three teenage to college-age males have been using tools to cut the bike chains securing the bicycles.
Police have identified one of the suspects and retrieved one of the stolen bikes. That bike has been returned to its owner. The suspect is not a UMD student and charges are pending against him, following the rest of the investigation.
Police will continue to investigate throughout the day. They are also investigating if the other thefts are in any way connected or related to the suspect.
The investigation could take several hours. This story will be updated as more information is received.
In the meantime, here are a few safety tips and a message from the UMDPD:
- Use high-quality locks and chains to secure bicycles.
- Secure bicycles only to bicycle racks, which are located in highly visible areas on campus; not to objects that aren't intended for bicycle security, which may not be visible to the public.
- Record and store serial numbers of bicycles and accessories.
- Report any suspicious activity or persons on campus by calling 911 immediately, any time of the day or night.
We ask anyone with information on these thefts to contact us by calling 911. We thank you for your partnership in keeping UMD safe!
