It’s that time of year when the first flurries of snow begin to fall and the Halloween spirit is in the air. Duluth has plenty of free events going on this week to accompany the vibes and energy surrounding us. Start the week off with a little hop in your step by participating in an International Folk Dancing session on Monday, Oct. 28, from 6:45- 8:45 p.m. These sessions are held at the Myers- Wilkins School Gym, located at 1027 N. 8th Ave. E.
On the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 29, relax and chill out to a live jazz duo at the Black Water Lounge from 6:00- 9:00 p.m. If you are still feeling intellectually stimulated at the end of the day, head over to Grandma's Saloon and Grill for History in a Pint with Neill Atkins. At 6:00 p.m., Atkins will be speaking about, “The Navy Hospital Corpsman’s Charges: Marines, Sailors and Seals.”
Halloween night, Thursday, Oct. 31, brings about many splendid and spooky events. For the sake of length, I’ve only chosen to write about two, but watch for tweets from HapsInDuluth1 the day of for information about other events, or check out other local website’s calendars linked at the bottom of the page. From 4:30- 7:30 p.m., the Harrison Community Center will be hosting “Haunted Happenings: The Legend of Hawthorne Manner.” The event will be a mix of creepy, enlightening and informational activities. Take a tour of the manor’s kitchen, solve the mystery of the family’s disappearance, learn about sanitary food preparation, and learn sample recipes. Or you can get dressed up and go cruise around the town on wheels. At 5:00 p.m., “Bike Grave 2” will be taking off from The Bike Cave at 1712 Jefferson Street. Don’t forget your costume!
The spirits of the dead are coming to life on Saturday, Nov. 2, at Duluth All Souls Night, a celebration of Day of the Dead. From 6:00- 8:00 p.m., face painting, memorial ceremonies, marching and dancing will be taking place at the Depot. The festivities will continue at the Sacred Heart from 8:00- 10:00 p.m., with art exhibits, music and poetry for a cover charge.
I have a few options to cap off the week on Sunday, Nov. 3. For the active folk, NMTC Fall Trail Series will be hosting a 10k through Hartley Nature Center at 2:00 p.m. Being that we are in Minnesota, I feel I should advertise the Viking’s game: kick- off at noon. And at 10:00 p.m., the Zinema 2 will be showing a full screening of the latest episode of AMC's The Walking Dead.
It is a busy week with a lot of fun events going around town so be sure to follow HapsInDuluth1 on Twitter for more options or visit other local calendars linked below. Have a happy Halloween and stay warm!
